The Culture Map: First Impression

planted Jun 06, 2026 Working with International team
  • Probably I need to explain why I read this book in the first place. My intent are:

  • Short-term purpose: Work with current team member that are nationally and culturally diverse

  • Long-term purpose: Want to lead my own diverse team also. Believe that working skill like this will be super valuable for us

  • Now reading Chapter 2. Zoom in: “The Many Faces of Polite”. What a chapter name.

  • Surprising point: there’s a difference between “Communicating” and “Evaluating”… and country who low context in “Communicating” (straightforward) can be the opposite in Evaluating (add 3 compliment first, then add 1 negative feedback)

  • There’s a spectrum of country in “Evaluating”. Figure 2.2

  • Is it really possible to just communicate your evaluating and communicating style upfront? For example: “Hey, I’m Indonesian so probbaly I will be high context in both Communicating and Evaluating. I read this book and although it might be stereotype, I’m in the high context of spectrum. Will improve my communicating style but I’ll do this and this when give feedback to you”
